Help For Kids Struggling Academically
No parent wants to watch their child needlessly struggle in school. But sometimes, despite our best efforts, our children can fall behind. So if your child is struggling with learning or schoolwork, don’t panic. Instead, you can get them back on track by following a couple of strategies.
1) Speak With The Teacher
First, talk to your child’s teacher. They may be able to offer insights into why your child is struggling. In addition, they might provide advice on things you can do at home to help.
Naturally, your child may not want to open up about specific problems at school. But, on the other hand, they may feel embarrassed about their performance, so it’s worth speaking with their teacher for additional insight.
2) Is Your Child Studying?
Next, take a look at your child’s study habits. Are they doing their homework? Are they studying for tests? If not, that’s likely most of the problem. So help them develop good study habits and make sure they’re sticking to them.
If academic problems are related to a lack of studying, you can step in and help your child develop disciplined study habits. Unfortunately, study habits don’t come naturally, so it’s crucial to work with kids to ingrain these habits to overcome current challenges.
3) Extra Help Is Always Available
Recruiting a tutor for your child is another effective tactic. By providing a one-on-one learning environment, your child has the resources and attention they need to excel in their coursework.
Whether your student needs help grasping the material or requires more time to complete assignments, a tutor works with them to ensure they understand the concepts and work through the material at their own pace.
Additionally, there are online resources available that can give your child the extra help they need. These websites offer interactive games and activities and printable worksheets to practice different skills.
4) What Does Your Child Say?
Finally, don’t forget to speak frankly to your child about their feelings. They may be feeling frustrated or even embarrassed about struggling in school. Let them know that it’s okay and you’re there to help them.
When your child struggles, they rely on your expert guidance more than ever. With perseverance and a plan, you can help them achieve their academic goals.
5) Consider Potential Learning Issues
Sometimes, learning problems stem from an underlying issue. While not always the case, some children suffer from one or more of the following:
- Learning disabilities
- Speech or language disorders
- Autism spectrum disorders
- Intellectual disabilities
- Developmental delays
- Visual, hearing, or orthopedic issues
It’s always worth ruling out any of these concerns as a potential root cause of academic troubles.
If your child struggles in school, don’t panic. There are things you can do to help them get back on track. Talk to their teacher, take a look at their study habits, and consider getting some extra help from a professional at Swan Learning Center.
